Are any MFM practices in Oregon billing for Genetic Counselors?  If so, how are you billing the services?  Is it payer dependent?  Are the claims getting paid?  Any information would be helpful....

Genetic counselors in OR (and perhaps other places) cannot bill under their own name.

In our OR practice, our GC spend an hour with the patient. The GC reports the content of their counseling to the MFM covering for the day - who then meets with the patient, asks how the patient is doing, paraphrases the content of the counseling and makes sure the patient understands the care plan (do testing/decline testing), then the visit is billed at a low level (level 1 new or 2 established) in line with component-based billing.

In most parts of the country, GC services are not directly reimbursed and most people will bill as Barbara Fisher outlines but time based instead of component based (more likely to be accurate due to lack of physical exam and other historical evidence gathering).  I think it is important to note that SMFM has pushed for covering of GC services for over 3 years as the current medical standards environment leaves this as an unfunded mandate.
