Hi Barbara,
Z39.0 (Encounter for care and examination of mother immediately after delivery) is a billable code that may be used. If there are more specific codes available, those can be used (and are preferred). For anemia, you can use O99.03 (anemia complicating the puerperium). For O70.0 (first degree laceration), I could not find any alternative codes specifically for postpartum; since it is part of the Pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium codes chapter, I think it is okay to use for the subsequent visits.
You have some great questions re PP care, which many consultative only MFMs do not usually interface with. You may ask your questions also on the SMFM coding website (https://www.smfm.org/coding/questions/new). These questions will be sent to the entire committee for review and formal response.
Hope this helps, thank you,
Steve

Subject: Z39.0 When to use it.
I have a question regarding IP/OBS subsequent visit. I have a Dr using Z39.0 for 99232. Is that correct or should they use EX: O70.0 (laceration) , D64.9 asymptomatic anemia, Z3A.40.
Just needing some clarification. Thanks
